that was back when joe biden wasn't trying to be the next to barack obama. he was trying to be president obama or at least he wanted the same job that barack obama currently holds. that was biden's second time going for the nation's top spot. and here's what we know. that he really, really wanted to be president. and it is not a long logical leap to deduce that now he might be thinking he could be president. then again, joe biden is turning 70 next month. if he ends up doing another four-year stint at vice president, he may want to retire back to delaware with jill and her family. whatever. paul ryan, on the other hand, he's got nothing but time. 42 years old, the congressman has already proven his ambition for political power and a even shorter logical leap to wonder if he is thinking about 2016. do that for me. handicap. are these two guys imagining themselves on the presidential debate stage next time? >> absolutely. there's no question about it. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out if their boss, quote-unquote loses in 2012, the next step is

we're not going to see that in the next four weeks, but this gives obama the space and frankly gives governor romney the space to say, we're no longer in the crisis we're in. what are we going to do so that four years from now when whoever runs for president four years from now faces an economic with a lower unemployment rate. >> both candidates have their opportunity based on these numbers and quite honestly even numbers before that to point toward a vision for what's next. >> which is lacking from the debate the other night. >> correct. what romney does not have an opportunity to do is make a concerted, passionate argument about how bad things are and how much worse this administration has made them. you can have an open argument about how much better they could and who has a better glide path to that future, and hopefully that's what we get in the next four weeks, right? you can't do this is terrible and this is made worse by this administration. >> let's talk about the jobs have been added, health care, transportation, leisure, hospitality and construction as well. 16,000 jobs lo

no one's talking about what we're going to do in the next couple years. usually it's the other way around with politicians. neither romney nor obama has told people here's how your life will be better if i'm elected president. >> or harder. >> there are some sacrifices, but those sacrifices are supposed to make it better. >> but we talked last night, mark, about candidates and leaders that tell the truth and how the truth works. but yet that doesn't seem -- not necessarily among the presidential candidates, i would say they skirt the hard truths. but there are candidates out there that are afraid to tell the truth as well. >> well, we talked about telling hard truths, and our hope was that given the nature of the challenges that we face right now, which we know are going to take some hard truths, there would be some discussion about that. and both campaigns, i think, largely have been trying to avoid that, playing it safer. and this is the time to have that dialogue. so hopefully we'll see some of that tonight. >> it would be great if one question was ask

let's take a look at this and the next ten years. so the ten years in front of us and what each proposed. what's interesting is that president obama and congressman ryan have almost the exact same proposal for the next ten years, save $1 trillion from medicare, not by cutting benefits or raising costs to elderly, but reducing payments to hospitals and other kind of providers. interestingly those two are in the same place on the next two years. romney for whatever set of reasons says he doesn't want to do anything in the next ten years, which means that $1 trillion that his vice presidential running mate would save he does not want to save. he's in a different place on the next ten years. so let's go to the period after that. what's the long-term plan that each of these guys has for cost containment. again, very interestingly, president obama congressman ryan want to achieve exactly the same level of medicare spending over the definite future. they want to increase by gdp plus 1.5%. they would get there different ways. president obama
